What Is the AMC Exam? A Complete Guide for Parents and Students

For students who genuinely enjoy mathematics, the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) can offer a very different experience from a regular school examination. The questions are designed to make students think, look for patterns, and find efficient ways to solve unfamiliar problems. That is why the competition is often recommended for students who want to develop stronger mathematical problem-solving skills.

The AMC stands for American Mathematics Competitions. The programme is organised by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and includes the AMC 8, AMC 10 and AMC 12. Students who perform exceptionally well in the AMC 10 or AMC 12 may also qualify for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination, or AIME. 

What Is the AMC Exam?

The AMC is a series of mathematics competitions for school students. MAA describes the competitions as a way to develop analytical and problem-solving skills through mathematical problems that differ from those students usually encounter in school. More than 300,000 students across the United States and more than 30 other countries participate in the AMC programme. 

There are three main AMC examinations. The right one depends primarily on a student's grade and age.

• AMC 8 is intended for students in Grade 8 and below who are under 15.5 years old on the day of the competition. It contains 25 questions and lasts 40 minutes. The questions cover areas such as counting and probability, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry, estimation, spatial visualisation, and interpreting graphs and tables. 
• AMC 10 is designed for students in Grade 10 and below who are under 17.5 years old on the competition day. It contains 25 multiple-choice questions and lasts 75 minutes. Its content includes elementary algebra, basic geometry, elementary number theory, probability, and related high school mathematics. Trigonometry and advanced algebra and geometry are excluded from the AMC 10 syllabus. 
• AMC 12 is open to students in Grade 12 and below who are under 19.5 years old on the competition day. It also contains 25 multiple-choice questions and lasts 75 minutes. The AMC 12 covers the broader high school mathematics curriculum, including trigonometry, advanced algebra and advanced geometry, but does not include calculus. 

How Is the AMC Different From a School Maths Exam?

The main difference lies in the kind of thinking required. A school examination may ask students to apply a method they have recently learned. AMC questions can require students to recognise an unexpected relationship, eliminate possibilities, identify a pattern, or find a shorter route to the answer.

This does not mean that students need university-level mathematics. The questions are based on the appropriate school-level mathematics for each competition. The challenge comes from how that mathematics is presented and applied. MAA specifically describes AMC 10 and AMC 12 problems as more complex than routine school problems while keeping them connected to high school mathematics. 

For parents, this distinction is important. A student who performs well in school mathematics is not automatically prepared for the AMC. At the same time, a student does not need to know advanced mathematics simply to begin.

What Is the Difference Between AMC 8, AMC 10 and AMC 12?

The progression in AMC is fairly straightforward. AMC 8 introduces younger students to mathematical problem-solving. AMC 10 extends this experience through more advanced high school mathematics, while AMC 12 covers a larger portion of the high school curriculum.

Students cannot take both the AMC 10 and AMC 12 on the same competition day. The AMC 10 and AMC 12 each have A and B versions on separate dates, so eligible students can potentially participate in both versions. 

The choice should depend on eligibility, mathematical preparation and the student's longer-term competition goals.

What Happens After the AMC?

For some students, the AMC is the beginning of a longer mathematical competition pathway.

Students who achieve the required qualifying score on the AMC 10 or AMC 12 can become eligible for the AIME. For the 2026 to 2027 cycle, MAA has announced fixed qualification thresholds of 100 or above on the AMC 10 and 85 or above on the AMC 12, subject to the other AIME eligibility requirements. 

The AIME is considerably more difficult than the AMC. It has 15 questions, with each answer entered as an integer from 0 to 999. Strong performance in this pathway can lead to further invitational competitions, including the USAMO or USAJMO for eligible students. 

The AMC therefore has value beyond a single competition day. For students interested in mathematics, it can become part of a longer journey towards higher-level problem solving.

When Is the AMC Held?

For the 2026 to 2027 cycle, AMC 10 A and AMC 12 A are scheduled for 5 November 2026, while AMC 10 B and AMC 12 B are scheduled for 13 November 2026. The AMC 8 will run from 21 to 27 January 2027. 

Registration works differently from many school examinations. In the United States and Canada, students and parents do not register directly with MAA. They normally participate through an eligible school, university, maths circle or learning centre that acts as a competition manager. International students participate through MAA's International Group Leaders where their country has an approved arrangement. 

For Indian students, checking the current AMC International arrangements is particularly important before planning participation.

How Should Students Prepare for the AMC?

Preparation should begin with problem-solving rather than memorising formulas.

Students should first become comfortable with the mathematics covered by their particular AMC. After that, timed practice with previous AMC questions can help them understand the style of the competition.

The review process matters just as much as the practice itself. A difficult question should be revisited after the solution is understood. Students should ask whether the problem could have been solved more efficiently and whether the same idea might appear in another form.
