AP Exam Formats: Digital vs. Hybrid

Transition to Digital
Starting May 2025, the College Board has discontinued paper testing for 28 out of 36 AP subjects; these now use the Bluebook digital testing application.

Fully Digital Exams (16 subjects)
Multiple-choice and free-response questions are completed entirely within digital examination structure, and responses are automatically submitted at the end of the exam.

Hybrid Digital Exams (12 subjects)
Students answer multiple-choice questions and view free-response prompts in Bluebook but handwrite their free-response answers in paper booklets, which are later collected for scoring.

Examples of Hybrid Subjects
AP Biology, AP Calculus AB & BC, AP Chemistry, AP Macroeconomics, AP Microeconomics, AP Physics (1, 2, C Mechanics, C E&M), AP Precalculus, AP Statistics.

Exam Security & Benefits
Digital exams enhance security (reducing theft and leaks), streamline administration, and provide a more student-friendly interface.

Bluebook & Test Day Toolkit
Bluebook is the exam app students use on compatible devices (Mac, Windows, iPads, Chromebooks); Test Day Toolkit is the web application used by coordinators and proctors to manage testing logistics.

User-Friendly Features
Students can highlight, annotate, mark questions for review, and use an integrated Desmos graphing calculator (except for AP Statistics). Scratch paper is still provided.

Format Consistency
The number of sections, types of questions, duration, and overall structure of the exam remain unchanged from previous paper-based versions.

AP Diagnostic Test

The AP Diagnostic test allows students to evaluate their current knowledge and skills in a specific AP subject before they begin their AP preparation. It empowers the students to assess their existing knowledge, set goals, create customized study plans, reduce test anxiety, and improve their AP exam performance.
