What are AP Exams?

Advanced Placement (AP) courses and exams, administered by the College Board, offer high school students the opportunity to study college-level material and, depending on their scores and institutional policies, earn college credit or advanced placement. AP participation helps learners demonstrate academic rigor on university applications and can reduce the time and cost of a college degree when accepted for credit.

Structure of AP Exams

  • The College Board offers AP Exams for 40+ different subjects, divided into 7 major categories:
    • AP Capstone Diploma Program
    • Arts
    • English
    • History and Social Sciences
    • Math and Computer Science
    • Sciences
    • AP World Languages and Cultures
  • The exam structure includes multiple-choice and free-response components; some courses incorporate portfolios or performance tasks.
  • Each AP Exam is scored on a 1–5 scale:
    • 5 = Extremely well qualified;
    • 4 = Well qualified;
    • 3 = Qualified;
    • 2 = Possibly qualified;
    • 1 = No recommendation.

Colleges use these scores to decide on credit or placement, and policies vary by institution. Refer to the College Board’s AP Credit Policy Search to see school-specific rules.

  2. A small number of AP courses use other delivery modes: portfolio submissions (AP Art & Design, AP Seminar/Research tasks, AP CSP artifacts via the AP Digital Portfolio) or school-controlled exam apps for some world languages.
  3. Calculator rules vary by subject. For exams that allow calculators, students may use approved handheld calculators and/or the built-in Desmos calculator in Bluebook.

Latest AP Exam Participation Synopsis

  • In May 2024, 3,079,134 students sat 5,744,259 AP Exams across 23,722 secondary schools (College Board).
  • For the Class of 2024, 35.7% of U.S. public high school graduates took at least one AP Exam during high school; 22.6% scored a 3 or higher on at least one AP Exam. These numbers reflect expanded participation and improved access over time.

AP Credit, Placement, and College Policies

Colleges set their own AP credit and placement policies. Many institutions grant credit or advanced standing for scores of 3, 4, or 5, though highly selective universities sometimes require a 4 or 5. The College Board’s AP Credit Policy Search is the authoritative tool to check an individual institution’s policy.

Frequently asked Questions

Do I need special devices for digital AP Exams?

Yes. Students need a compatible device such as a Mac, Windows PC, Chromebook, or iPad with the Bluebook™ app installed. A stable internet connection is required for setup and submission.

Are all AP Exams digital now?

No. Most AP Exams (28 of 36 subjects) are digital or hybrid digital. A few subjects, like AP Music Theory, AP Languages (Spanish, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Japanese), and AP Art & Design, still use the traditional paper format.

How do hybrid exams work on test day?

Students complete multiple-choice questions digitally in Bluebook™ and view free-response questions in the app. They then handwrite their answers in paper booklets, which are collected and sent for scoring.

What is the Test Day Toolkit?

The Test Day Toolkit is a web application for coordinators and proctors to manage digital AP exams, including student check-in, device verification, and exam administration.

Can I use accommodations for digital AP Exams?

Yes. Students approved for accommodations (extended time, extra breaks, screen readers, etc.) can use them in both fully digital and hybrid digital exams. Schools must submit approved accommodations via the AP Coordinator.
