What is ESAT?

The Engineering and Science Admissions Test (ESAT) is a computer-based assessment administered by UAT-UK and delivered at Pearson VUE centers. Designed to evaluate the academic potential of students applying for undergraduate courses in engineering, natural sciences, and related disciplines. It is accepted by several UK universities, including the University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, and UCL, to assess applicants' abilities in mathematics and science.

ESAT Test Structure

The ESAT comprises five modules:

Module Duration Questions Description
Mathematics 1 40 minutes 27 Core mathematics skills required for engineering and science courses.
Mathematics 2 40 minutes 27 Advanced mathematics topics for applicants to more math-intensive programs.
Physics 40 minutes 27 Tests understanding of mechanics, electricity, waves, and other physics topics.
Chemistry 40 minutes 27 Assesses knowledge of chemical principles, reactions, and problem-solving.
Biology 40 minutes 27 Evaluates understanding of cell biology, genetics, ecology, and physiology.

ESAT Syllabus & Topic-Wise Breakdown

  1. Mathematics 1 (Compulsory for all candidates)

Questions are grounded in core mathematics fundamentals, targeting fluency in basic concepts:

    • Units: Standard and compound units (length, mass, time), conversions (e.g., speed, density, rates)
    • Number: Arithmetic operations, proportions, ratios
    • Algebra: Simplification, expressions
    • Geometry: Basics of shapes and coordinate applications
    • Statistics & Probability: Averages, frequency interpretation

These topics are based on GCSE-to-A-level standards and are designed to test conceptual clarity.

  2. Optional Modules (Choose Two): Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics 2

Biology

Topics typically examined include cells & cell division, inheritance, gene technologies, ecosystems, and animal/plant physiology.

Chemistry

Extensive topic coverage includes:

  • Atomic structure, chemical bonding, periodic table trends
  • Organic chemistry (functional groups, reactions)
  • Acids, bases & salts, energetics, electrolysis
  • Metals, separation techniques, chemical tests, air & water chemistry

Physics

Key physics areas tested include:

  • Electricity & circuits (Ohm’s law, V–I graphs, circuit elements)
  • Magnetism (fields, electromagnetism, induction)
  • Mechanics (forces, kinematics, energy, and momentum)
  • Thermal physics (heat transfer, specific heat)
  • Waves & optics (wave properties, EM spectrum)
  • Radioactivity (atomic structure, decay, half-life)

Mathematics 2

This includes more advanced mathematical techniques:

  • Advanced algebra (sequences, series)
  • Functions and graphing (exponential, logarithmic, trig)
  • Differentiation & integration, including applications and interpretation

ESAT Scoring and Results

  • Scoring: Each module is reported on a 1.0–9.0 scale (recorded to one decimal place), with a separate score per module.
  • No Negative Marking: There is no penalty for incorrect answers, so it is advisable to attempt all questions.
  • Result Reporting: Results are typically used alongside other application materials and are not the sole determinant of admission.

Features of ESAT

  • Mathematics 1 is compulsory, while students may select additional modules based on university requirements.
  • Modules are taken sequentially on the test day.
  • Each module is scored separately, and universities may weigh them differently.
  • Calculators are not allowed. Pearson VUE test centers provide an erasable booklet/pen for rough work; personal papers are not permitted.
  • ESAT is computer-based and administered at Pearson VUE test centers worldwide — you must register via UAT-UK and book with Pearson VUE.
  • Candidates who require special accommodations should apply through the UAT-UK website before registering.
  • Bursaries: Financial assistance may be available for eligible UK candidates.
  • ESAT is offered in two sittings each admissions cycle - in October and January sittings.
  • If you’re applying to the University of Cambridge, you must sit the October ESAT sitting; other universities may accept either sitting.
  • You may only sit ESAT once per admissions cycle; check the university rules about which sitting they accept.
