AP Exam Late Testing 2027: Dates, Rules and How It Works

Oct 02, 2026 | 12:32 pm

AP Exam Late Testing 2027 covers the official late-testing dates, eligibility circumstances, ordering process and key rules students need to understand. This guide explains how late testing works, when students can take an alternate exam, and what to know before making arrangements.

AP exam late testing

It is quite a common occurrence that a student is unable to take an AP Exam during its regular May testing slot. Students may also face two AP Exams scheduled at the same time. In such cases, College Board provides a late-testing window. For 2027, AP late testing will take place from May 17 to May 21. The exams use alternate versions to protect the security of AP exam content.

What Is AP Late Testing?

AP late testing allows eligible students to take an AP Exam during the designated late-testing period instead of its regular scheduled session.

It is not an informal option for students who simply want a different exam date. College Board has specific policies governing when late testing can be used.

The late exams are alternate versions of the regular exams. This helps protect exam security when students test after the main administration.

When Is AP Late Testing in 2027?

The 2027 AP late-testing window runs from Monday, May 17 through Friday, May 21.

The schedule is divided into Session 1 and Session 2. For example, AP English Literature and Composition is scheduled for Session 1 on May 17, while AP Business with Personal Finance, AP French Language and Culture and AP Human Geography are scheduled for Session 2.

Other subjects are distributed across the week.

Students should not assume that their late exam will be held at the same time as their original exam. The late-testing schedule has its own published dates and sessions.

Why Might a Student Need Late Testing?

One common reason is an unavoidable conflict between two AP Exams scheduled for the same time. College Board allows late testing in circumstances such as:

  • two or more AP Exams scheduled at the same date and time
  • a conflict with an IB or Cambridge examination
  • a serious illness, injury or family emergency
  • a religious observance
  • a school closure caused by a natural disaster, election or national holiday
  • a conflict with nationally, state- or province-mandated testing
  • a high school graduation ceremony
  • certain approved academic or athletic events
  • disability accommodation or exam administration issues that prevent regular testing

The school and AP coordinator are responsible for determining the appropriate testing arrangements. Students should therefore discuss the situation with their AP coordinator as soon as they know there may be a conflict.

College Board states that AP coordinators are responsible for telling students when and where to report for late exams.

Can You Choose Late Testing Just Because It Is More Convenient?

Students cannot simply select a late date because it suits their personal schedule better.

Late testing is not a general rescheduling option. AP coordinators must indicate a reason when moving an exam to the late-testing administration. Most approved circumstances do not carry an additional fee, while some other reasons may result in a $40 late-testing fee.

If you think you have a legitimate reason for late testing, speak to your AP coordinator rather than making independent arrangements.

What About Exam Start Times?

There are also changes to AP exam start times beginning in 2027. Some locations will have different start times to reduce the risk of secure exam content being disclosed across time zones.

For most schools in the lower 48 United States, Hawaii and Washington, D.C., exams continue to start at 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. local time. Students outside these locations should check their school's specific start time.

Your AP coordinator will provide the exact reporting information.

How Should Students Prepare for a Late AP Exam?

Late testing does not mean you should postpone preparation until after the regular exam period.

Your late exam is still an AP Exam, and you should prepare according to the same course and exam framework. However, because your exam may take place several days after other students have finished, you should continue reviewing the material rather than assuming your preparation is complete after the first week of May.

Keep your final revision focused on weak areas, practice questions and exam timing. Avoid relying on information shared by students who have already taken the regular exam. The late-testing version is an alternate exam.

What Students Should Do Now

If you already know that you have an AP exam conflict or another circumstance that may require late testing, speak to your AP coordinator early.

Do not wait until the week of the exam to clarify your arrangements. Your coordinator will tell you whether late testing applies, which date and session you should attend, and where you need to report.

The official late-testing schedule should always be treated as the final reference for dates.
