The Advanced Placement (AP) programme is expanding its focus on career-related learning with two new courses for the 2026–27 academic year: AP Cybersecurity and AP Business with Personal Finance. Both are part of AP Career Kickstart, an initiative designed to help students develop practical skills relevant to higher education and future careers.
These additions give students more opportunities to explore technology, entrepreneurship and financial decision-making while still in high school. For students planning their academic pathways, the new courses offer an alternative to choosing AP subjects solely from traditional academic disciplines.
How Many AP Courses Are There in 2026–27?
The College Board lists 42 AP subjects, including AP Cybersecurity and AP Business with Personal Finance. The programme covers a wide range of disciplines, from mathematics, science and computer science to languages, history, literature and the arts. The AP Career Kickstart courses add a more explicit focus on career-related knowledge and practical applications.
Students should also distinguish between AP courses available in 2026–27 and those scheduled for a later year. AP Networking is being piloted at selected schools during 2026–27 but will not launch broadly until the 2027–28 academic year.

What Is AP Cybersecurity?
AP Cybersecurity introduces students to the methods used to protect data, devices and networks from digital threats. The course is designed around real-world scenarios, helping students understand how security problems arise and how to assess and respond to them.
Students develop skills in analysing and mitigating risk, detecting attacks and working collaboratively. They may examine issues involving weak authentication, malware, application vulnerabilities, access controls and suspicious activity. Rather than focusing only on definitions, the course asks students to apply their knowledge to security situations and evaluate evidence.
Who Should Consider AP Cybersecurity?
The course may suit students interested in computer science, information technology, digital security or related fields. It can also be worth exploring for students who enjoy logical problem-solving and want to understand how digital systems are protected. The College Board lists no recommended prerequisites for AP Cybersecurity. However, students should still review the course description, speak to their school and consider the time they can commit to the subject before enrolling.
What Does the AP Cybersecurity Exam Involve?
The AP Cybersecurity Exam is fully digital and is scheduled for May 5, 2027. It lasts two hours and ten minutes and includes 60 multiple-choice questions worth 70% of the score, followed by one free-response question worth 30%. The assessment uses career-connected scenarios. Students must interpret evidence, identify vulnerabilities, evaluate possible attacks and explain their reasoning. This makes it important to practise applying concepts to unfamiliar situations, rather than relying on memorisation alone.
What Is AP Business with Personal Finance?
AP Business with Personal Finance combines introductory business concepts with practical personal finance. Students explore entrepreneurship, marketing, accounting, management and financial decision-making through case studies and projects.
The course covers how businesses identify market opportunities, develop ideas, understand customers and make strategic decisions. It also introduces personal finance topics such as budgeting, borrowing, credit, saving, investing, taxes and financial risk.
One of its central components is the application of financial knowledge to realistic situations. Students may develop a business idea or recommend financial decisions for a fictional household. The course is equivalent to an introductory college-level business course and has no recommended prerequisites.
Who Should Consider AP Business with Personal Finance?
This course may appeal to students interested in business, economics, entrepreneurship, management or finance. It can also help students who want to understand how businesses operate and how individuals make financial decisions.
Students do not need to have a fixed career plan to benefit from the subject. An interest in problem-solving, analysing choices and understanding financial systems can provide a useful starting point.
The AP Business with Personal Finance Exam is scheduled for May 4, 2027. Students should check the official course and exam information and confirm arrangements with their AP coordinator.
What Is the AP Career Kickstart?
AP Career Kickstart is College Board's initiative for career-connected AP courses. The courses combine college-level learning with professional and technical skills relevant to high-demand careers. Students who meet the requirements can earn an AP Career Kickstart employer-endorsed credential. Qualifying AP Exam scores may also lead to college credit or advanced placement, but those policies are determined individually by colleges and universities.
How Can Students Enrol in the New AP Courses?
The availability depends on the school. Students whose schools offer AP Cybersecurity or AP Business with Personal Finance should speak to a teacher, school counsellor or principal about enrolment. If the courses are not currently offered, students can express their interest to school leadership and share the College Board's AP Career Kickstart information page.
Before enrolling, it is advised that students should consider their academic interests, current workload and longer-term plans. They should also check how the course fits alongside other subjects and whether the school can support the required instruction and assessment.
