The Difference Between AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature and Composition

Apr 30, 2026

If you’re a college student in the US staring at your course selection sheet for next year, you will see AP Courses with names that sound almost identical. If you’re trying to figure out the difference between AP English and Composition and AP English Literature and Composition, you are definitely not alone.

At first glance they both seem to involve a lot of reading and even more writing. While these two AP Classes look similar in the English department, they certainly are not twins.

What exactly is the core difference between the two?

If you ask a veteran teacher (or a Tutela prep expert) to sum up the differences, it usually sounds like this:

  • AP Language is about how arguments are made. It focuses on rhetoric, non-fiction, and the art of persuasion.
  • AP Literature is about what it means to be human. It focuses on fiction, poetry, and the analysis of literary themes.

To make it even simpler, in AP language, you analyse what the writer is doing to the reader. In AP Literature, you analyze what the author is trying to say about life.

Introduction to AP English Language and Composition

Often referred to as “AP Lang”, this course is the ultimate course in rhetoric. If you have ever wondered why a political speech made you feel inspired, or why a commercial made you want to buy something you don’t need, this class will give you the vocabulary to explain why.

What you will read

In AP Lang, non-fiction is king. You will spend your years immersed in essays, speeches, journalism, memoirs, and letters. Not to say fiction won’t be there. You might read The Crucible by Arthur Miller and The Scarlet Letter by Hawthorne.

The Skills you build

The course is about mastering rhetorical analysis. You learn to identify an author’s purpose, audience, and the stylistic choices (diction, syntax, imagery) they use to persuade. You will become a master of argumentative writing.

Who should take this?

If you enjoy dating, reading the news, or writing opinion pieces, AP Lang is for you. It is also the course that most directly prepares you for college-level writing in any major, from Political Science to Computer Science.

Understanding AP English Literature and Composition

AP Lit is the class where you get to live inside a story. It focuses on the art of the written word. While AP Lang asks, “What is the author’s argument?” AP Lit asks, “What is the author’s meaning?”

What you will read

Get ready for a deep dive into fiction, drama, and poetry. The reading list is more focused on classic literature like The Great Gatsby, Hamlet, Beloved, etc.

The skills you will learn

This course emphasises literary analysis. You will look at character development, narrative structure, figurative language, and complex themes. The writing is more interpretive. You aren’t arguing a point as much as you are exploring the deeper complexities of a text.

Who should take this?

If you are a voracious reader who loves poetry, enjoys unpacking symbolism, and doesn’t mind spending hours on a single novel, you will thrive in AP Lit.  It is a favourite for students planning to major in Humanities, English, or Creative Writing.

The exam structure, what to expect

To understand the workload, it helps to look at the final exams. Both exams are 3 hours long and consist of MCQs and essay sections, but the content varies.

In AP Lang, the MCQ focuses on function passages, reading comprehension tests and rhetorical analysis. The essay section is like a synthetic essay created using an argument with sources. You are also required to analyse a non-fiction text and take a stance on a given topic.

In AP Lit, the MCQ focuses on fiction, poetry, and drama. You can be asked to analyse a poem for the essay section or analyse a passage from a novel or a short story. You can also be asked to analyse a passage from a novel or short story.

Which one should you choose?

Deciding between these AP courses can feel tricky, but it usually comes down to your strengths and academic goals.

Many students take AP Lang in their junior year and AP Lit in their senior year. This is the traditional sequence because Lang builds the foundational writing skills needed to succeed in Lit later on.

If you are using a college navigator to look at schools where you want to major in STEM or Business, AP Lang is often the better choice. It focuses on the persuasive and technical writing you will use in the corporate world, and it usually fulfils a broader range of college composition requirements.

If you plan to major in English or Law, AP Lit is excellent for developing great interpretive skills and reading stamina.

Frequently asked Questions

Do I have to take AP Language before AP Literature?

Usually, yes, but it depends on your school. AP Language is often recommended as a prerequisite because it teaches you how to write analytical essays. However, some students jump straight into AP Lit if they are strong readers.

Which AP English class is harder?

That depends on your natural skills. If you struggle with reading comprehension or poetry, AP Lit might feel harder. If you struggle with structuring arguments under time pressure, AP Lang might feel harder. Statistically, the pass rates are similar, but AP Lit often requires a heavier reading load outside of class.

Can I take both?

Absolutely! In fact, taking both is the best way to show colleges that you are a versatile, well-rounded student. Taking one does not mean you can’t take the other later. Many high schools schedule them in different years to allow for this.

If I am just starting to look into what the AP program is, which one should I start with?

If you are new to AP classes and want to dip your toes in, AP Language is often the safer bet for first-timers. The texts (non-fiction) are usually more approachable than the dense poetry and classic novels of AP Lit.
