IB MYP Grade Boundaries Explained: What 1-7 Really Means for Your Child's Future

IB MYP Grade Boundaries

Imagine this: your child enters the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) and suddenly hands you their report card full of 5s and 6s. The parental panic that can ensue is real. For parents accustomed to the traditional percentage or grade-based systems, the MYP scale feels like a foreign language. Understanding these boundaries can be a first step in mapping out a strategic path towards the IB Diploma Programme and elite university admissions.

Skill Map, Not Percentile

The IB evaluates students against published criteria, not against a class curve. This means instead of being ranked against peers, they are measured against rigorous global standards.

Tutela Translation: Behind the numbers

  • 1 - 3: Foundational Gaps. The student is struggling with conceptual clarity and understanding. Tutela Note: This is where immediate intervention is needed!
  • 4 - 5: Competent and consistent. The student understands the material well but struggles with higher-order application or critical thinking. 4–5: Competent and consistent. The student is meeting many subject expectations, though there may still be gaps in higher-order application, synthesis, or communication.
  • 6 - 7: Exceptional analytical thinking. The student can synthesise complex data and apply it to unfamiliar real-world situations.

A 5 or 6 is a strong baseline with room for strategic growth with proper guidance, planning and work. Don’t panic; see this as an opportunity to get to a 7!

How the Math Works: 32-point Matrix

Every MYP subject is graded across 4 assessment criteria, each worth 8 points maximum. This creates a 32-point matrix given that 8 points * 4 criteria = 32. The IB sets specific score ranges/boundaries to convert that total out of 32 into a final 1 - 7 grade. Many schools use conversion bands such as 28–32 for a 7 and 24–27 for a 6, but parents should always check the grade-boundary table used by their child’s school or the relevant IB assessment context.

How MYP Boundaries matter:

Universities usually place much more weight on Grade 11–12 performance, such as IB DP or A Level results, along with school transcripts and standardised testing where relevant. MYP scores are rarely the central admissions factor. However, the MYP is laying the foundation for the IB DP. Students consistently scoring 4s in MYP subjects may find the transition to demanding DP Higher Level subjects challenging unless the underlying gaps are addressed early.

MYP scores can be a useful diagnostic tool for early identification of conceptual gaps so that they can be worked on before a student reaches grade 10 or 11.

Conclusion

The MYP grading system is not a sprint. It is a marathon. While a 5 may feel like failure, it is a blueprint and starting point for growth!
