What is the TARA Exam? Everything Indian Students Need to Know Before Registering

What is Tara

Most Indian students who are aiming for UK university admissions must have already come across the names of exams like TMUA and ESAT. Recently, another name that commonly pops up on the course pages of UCL and Oxford is the TARA. Since the TARA exam is a newer addition to the list of UK entrance exams, confusion around it is common. Students might feel unsure about what the TARA tests are; whether it is subject knowledge, essay writing, maths or general aptitude, or all of them together.

What is the TARA test?

The TARA stands for Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions. TARA is managed by University Admissions Tests UK and delivered through Pearson VUE test centres. It is a computer-based university admissions test, introduced first for UCL admissions and is also adopted for certain courses at Oxford.

The TARA is different from traditional tests as it is not subject-specific. It rather focuses on reasoning and academic thinking than rote learning of information. The exam assesses students on 3 major factors: critical thinking, problem solving, and written communication.

Which university courses require the TARA exam?

At UCL, TARA is required for selected courses in Computer Science, Management Science, Social Sciences, Sociology, and European/International Social and Political Studies.

UCL Courses requiring TARA include:

  • Computer Science (BSc and MEng)
  • Computer Science and Mathematics (MEng)
  • Management Science (BSc and MSci)
  • European Social and Political Studies (BA)
  • International Social and Political Studies (BA)
  • Sociology (BSc)
  • Social Sciences (BSc)
  • Social Sciences with Data Science (BSc)
  • Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (MEng)
  • European Social and Political Studies: Dual Degree BA

It is important to note that all three TARA modules are compulsory for these courses.

For the University of Oxford, the TARA is required for several social science and humanities courses. These include

  • Economics and Management (BA)
  • History and Economics (BA)
  • History and Politics (BA)
  • Human Sciences (BA)
  • Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) (BA)
  • Psychology (Experimental) (BA/MSci)
  • Psychology, Philosophy and Linguistics (BA/MSci)

Not every course of UCL or Oxford requires you to clear the  TARA. It is advisable to keep a regular check of the official course pages for any updates before registering for the exam.

TARA exam pattern and structure

The TARA exam is of 120 minutes duration, divided into 3 modules. Each module has a time limit of 40 minutes.

1. Module I: Critical Thinking

It consists of 22 multiple-choice questions that assess a student’s ability to understand, analyse, and evaluate arguments, assumptions, evidence, and logical conclusions. The questions often resemble TSA-style reasoning problems.

2. Module II: Problem Solving

This module also consists of 22 multiple choice questions around numerical and logical reasoning, along with data interpretation and thinking. This module requires you to have basic mathematical knowledge and skills. The use of a calculator is not allowed.

3. Module III: Writing Task

This module provides three prompts to write an essay out of which only one has to be chosen. The word limit for this is 750 words. It majorly focuses on the student’s ability to structure their arguments properly and the clarity with which they do so. Dictionaries or electronic spell-checkers are not permitted.

It is worth noting that there is no specific academic eligibility rule like a minimum percentage or specific school boards to sit for the TARA. The actual necessity to take the exam only depends on whether the chosen university requires the TARA and whether the student is applying within the relevant admission cycle.

Registration Timeline and Dates

If you are planning to take the TARA exam in 2026 admissions cycle, then you should know the likely testing windows that align with UCAS application deadlines:

  • Test Window 1: October 12–16, 2026 sitting for applicants planning to meet early UCAS deadlines (such as Oxford).
  • Test Window 2: January 4–8, 2027 sitting for applicants with later programme deadlines.

The testing of this exam takes place through the Pearson VUE centres. The official UAT-UK dates are:

Most Oxford applicants must take the October sitting. The January sitting is generally for UCL and other non-Oxbridge applicants, except limited foundation-year or mature-college cases.

Tutela Prep’s practical tips for Indian students preparing for the TARA

  • The TARA differs greatly from traditional board exams. Hence it is important to focus on your reasoning skills rather than just rote memorisation.
  • Effective decision making matters heavily, so time management with accuracy should be practised.
  • Develop the habit of speed reading with understanding and clarity of questions.
  • Major areas that every student preparing should focus on are logical reasoning, argument analysis, and essay writing.

Structured guidance from coachings like Tutela Prep greatly help students understand the exam format early and avoid random preparation. This helps students save a lot of time and effort.

Although the TARA exam remains new and still creates a degree of uncertainty among students, the structure becomes much clearer and less intimidating once students understand what the test actually assesses. Students who begin early and understand the format properly are able to approach the exam with stronger confidence and achieve better results.
