ESAT TMUA TARA 2026 Guide: UK Admission Tests for Indians

The new tests at a glance:

The ESAT is the new gatekeeper for STEM degrees. It is a computer-based multiple-choice test consisting of modular test sections. The Mathematics 1 section is compulsory, followed by optional modules for Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Advanced Math. With a total of 120 minutes and 40 minutes per module, students must answer 27 questions for each section. Time does not carry over from one module to another, and no calculator is allowed.

The TMUA tests your mathematical reasoning skills and is vital for Computer Science, Economics and Math aspirants. It is a 150-minute test with 2 papers of 75 minutes with 20 questions each: paper 1 tests Application of Mathematical Knowledge and paper 2 tests Mathematical Reasoning (Logic). The papers are administered back-to-back, and no calculators are allowed.

TARA replaces earlier reasoning-test arrangements for several Oxford and UCL courses, including Oxford courses that previously used TSA-type testing and UCL Computer Science courses that used STAT in the 2025 cycle. It is not simply a test of your subject knowledge but a test of how you think. UCL’s Computer Science and Management program requires the TARA. It is required for several Oxford courses, including PPE, Economics & Management, History & Economics, History & Politics, Human Sciences, Experimental Psychology, Psychology, Philosophy and Linguistics. TARA is a 2-hour-long test divided into 3 modules of 40 minutes each, with no time carrying over to other modules. Module 1 is 22 Critical Thinking MCQs, Module 2 is 22 Problem Solving MCQs, and Module 3 is a compulsory essay assignment of max 750 words. No calculators are allowed for this test either.

The Difference between JEE/CBSE and these tests:

In exams like JEE or CBSE boards, a student is fit to use their allotted time across sections according to their preference. In contrast, the UAT-UK tests use rigid automatic timers for each section, and after the allotted time is over, that section locks you out. Unlike JEE or board-style preparation, these tests reward precise reasoning under strict section-wise timing, be it solving 27 conceptual questions for the ESAT or the 20 Mathematics questions in TMUA Paper 1.
