When Is the Right Time to Start Preparing for the TARA Exam 2026?

The purpose of the Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions (TARA) is to assess a candidate’s potential to succeed in an academically demanding undergraduate course. Questions draw upon general academic skills, rather than on subject-specific knowledge. The test is designed to be challenging in order to differentiate effectively between able applicants, including those who might have achieved the highest possible grades in school examinations.

For the 2027 entry cycle, TARA is required only for selected courses at UCL and Oxford with sittings in October 2026 and January 2027. Students should check the admissions-test requirement for their exact course before registering. As the TARA tests general reasoning and writing rather than discipline-specific knowledge, students' success depends on how consistently they build those skills over time.

The TARA Exam Modules

The TARA exam consists of three modules across which the students are tested, and each module is compulsory for the students appearing for the exam.
 

1. Critical Thinking: The skill of Critical Thinking is essential for many areas of academic study and often involves considering an argument put forward to promote or defend a particular point of view. Historians put forward arguments to explain and interpret past events, while scientists use arguments to evaluate evidence from their experiments. Whatever the subject of study, it is necessary to understand the arguments presented by others and to be able to assess whether the arguments establish their claims.
2. Problem Solving: Many of the problems encountered in academic and professional work are novel: no ready 'off-the-peg' solution is available. The task is to find or create a solution. This module assumes basic mathematical knowledge and skills.
3. Writing Task: The Writing Task provides an opportunity for candidates to demonstrate their capacity to consider different aspects of a proposition and to communicate them effectively in writing. Answers are limited to 750 words to promote the disciplined selection and organisation of ideas, together with their concise, accurate and effective expression. Dictionaries or electronic spell-checkers are not permitted.

Students have to complete all three modules in order. Each has its own time limit of 40 minutes, and the unused/remaining time does not carry over to the next module.

   For the 2027 entry cycle, UAT-UK has announced two test windows: 12–16 October 2026 and 4–8 January 2027. Most Oxford applicants must sit the October test. The January sitting is generally not applicable to Oxford or Cambridge applicants, except for limited cases such as Oxford Astrophoria Foundation Year applicants and Cambridge mature-college applicants with a January deadline.
• Account creation opens on 1 June 2026. October booking opens on 20 July 2026 and closes on 28 September 2026. January booking opens on 26 October 2026 and closes on 21 December 2026. Students needing access arrangements must apply earlier: by 14 September 2026 for the October sitting and 7 December 2026 for the January sitting.

How are students scored in the TARA exam?

The TARA gives separate scores for the Critical Thinking and Problem Solving modules on a scale from 1.0 to 9.0 (with one decimal place), indicating relative performance in each section. Scores are sent directly to the universities to which the candidate has applied for courses requiring TARA.

The Writing Task does not receive a numerical score from the testing organisation. Instead, your essay response is provided directly to admissions tutors, who read it as part of the overall evaluation of the application. 

There is no official pass or fail mark for TARA. Universities use scores comparatively alongside other parts of your application. 

When to start TARA exam preparation?

As a practical preparation guideline, students should begin structured TARA preparation at least 3 to 4 months before their selected test window. So if you’re appearing for the exam in the October window, then the right time to start preparation is in June-July. If the January window is your selected time, then start preparing from September to October.

This is the ideal preparation time for TARA as students can utilise this time to hone their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This leaves enough time to work through official specimen materials, TARA-style mocks, and selected reasoning practice from older TSA-style resources where relevant.
