The format:
There are two 75-minute papers back-to-back with 20 questions each, with no calculators allowed for the examination. While the papers appear identical on screen, they require two different ways of thinking. Success on the TMUA is not just a matter of knowledge of Mathematics but the ability to shift between the mindset required to ace Paper 1 and the mindset required to ace Paper 2.
Paper 1: Application of Mathematical Knowledge
The first paper is a test of your ability to apply mathematical knowledge to novel situations. It requires an understanding of AS-level Pure Mathematics, such as Algebra, Trigonometry, Coordinate Geometry, Sequences and Series, and Calculus.
For the Algebra section, which accounts for roughly 35% of the exam, expect usage of the Factor theorem, the Remainder theorem and quadratic optimisation. Often, you will be expected to find relationships between coefficients and roots of an equation.
The Calculus section focuses on differentiation for stationary points, tangents and normals, along with definite integrals for area calculations.
Coordinate Geometry will likely have questions involving straight lines and circles. You must be able to find intersections and perpendicular bisectors without the use of a calculator.
For the Sequences and Series part, mastering Arithmetic and Geometric progressions is necessary. Questions often involve finding the Sum to Infinity or identifying patterns in recursive sequences.
The Trigonometry section requires you to solve equations within specific ranges and manipulate identities. Without a formula sheet, having your identity bank memorised will boost your ability to perform in Paper 1.
Paper 2: Mathematical Reasoning
The second paper tests your ability to follow formal Mathematical arguments, identify logical flaws and work with proofs. While the Mathematical concepts are the same as Paper 1, the questions are wordier and filled with logical traps.
The logic syllabus is not taught in schools therefore Paper 2 is where most candidates stumble.
Must know concepts for this paper include: 1. Logical connectives, 2. Necessity vs Sufficiency, 3. Negation and 4. Proof techniques. Mastery of these concepts can mean the difference between a 5.0 and 7.5+.
Logical connectives require you to understand the difference between “If P, then Q” and “P if and only if Q”. A condition is necessary when it must be true for a particular phenomenon to take place, whereas a condition is sufficient when it is enough to be true. For example, oxygen is necessary for humans to live; however, oxygen cannot be sufficient for human life to persist, as one requires food, water, shelter, etc. Negation requires you to learn how to correctly negate a statement. For proof questions, you will be asked to identify the correct starting point for a Proof by Contradiction or pick the only valid Counterexample from a list of options.
Universal Hurdles:
Without a calculator, a simple arithmetic error can ruin a 5-minute derivation. Practising mental math problems daily will help develop the skill needed to perform on the papers. Without an identity bank or formula sheet, students will not be able to perform at a high level without memorisation of standard identities. Do not feel like it is necessary to do the questions in order; easier questions can be later in the sequence than harder questions. Do not get paralysed by the wording of questions, especially in Paper 2; instead, aim to break down the statements into formal logic. With no negative marking for answers, it is beneficial to never leave a question blank, even if unsure of the answer.
Final advice:
Stamina and strategic thinking are the essential skills to ace the TMUA. With a 1.0 to 9.0 scale, remember you are not aiming for 100% marks but to be in the top decile of candidates.
