8 ways to improve online classroom experience

Virtual learning has its pros and cons. On one hand, it keeps you safe and within the comfort of your home; but on the other hand, it can be frustrating and can eventually affect your productivity.
With a humble experience in online teaching, Tutela has curated 8 strategies to make online learning more effective.

#1: Students must set daily study targets: These targets should be realistic and should not be a product of procrastination. Achieving small targets can be a source of immense motivation. Use a planner to list down the targets.

#2: Students must create a dedicated ‘study space’: Choose a well-lit spot and be free from any apparent distractions. While using a study desk, be mindful of the posture you are maintaining. Do not be tempted to use your bed as a study space. It is a trap! Lastly, de-clutter your study space as and when necessary.

#3: Students must schedule time on their calendar: One need not be in front of the laptop 24 hours a day. One must dedicate a fixed amount of time to attending lectures and completing assignments. Students can start by adding deadlines to their tasks to ensure that course completion is not the last thing on their to-do lists. Remember, having an organized approach to virtual learning will ensure self-discipline.

#4: Students must actively take notes: Taking notes promotes active thinking, boosts comprehension, and extends attention span. It is an excellent strategy to retain knowledge whether students are learning online or in the classroom. While taking notes, you can use coloured pens or highlighters.

#5: Actively participate in classroom discussions and review sessions:  Ask doubts, initiate a conversation about assignments, and topics, share resources, etc. Do not allow your mind to zone out. Moreover, do understand that the teachers too are trying their level best to impart practical learning. Respect their efforts!

#6: Students should do only one thing at a time:  Multitasking is NOT always productive. Doing one task at a time helps absorb more information and increases productivity. Follow the ‘tick-and-proceed’ technique, in which you fully complete a task and then only proceed to the next one. Piling on functions will only increase anxiety.

#7: Students must take small breaks: Giving some rest to the brain after a class is critical to high performance. If students feel stuck on a challenging problem without much progress, they should take a break. Taking a walk in natural light, taking a shower, stretching, or talking with friends can rejuvenate you and give you new ideas on tackling the issue.

#8: Students should NOT spend long hours on mobile phones: Though mobile phones are a great source of entertainment, students must refrain from using them too much. Excessive use of mobile causes headaches, decreased attention span, shortness of temper, and sleep disorder, affecting productivity while studying.
